How to Use a Contact Lens Applicator & Tweezer Set: A Complete Guide
Using a contact lens inserter kit is the most hygienic way to handle your lenses. Whether you have long nails or are a beginner, follow these 5 easy steps for a struggle-free experience.
Step 1: Preparation & Hygiene
-
Wash Your Hands: Thoroughly wash your hands with mild, oil-free soap and dry them with a lint-free towel.
-
Sanitize the Tools: Always rinse your Contact Lens Tweezer and Applicator with fresh multi-purpose solution before every use. Never use tap water.
Step 2: Picking up the Lens (Using Tweezers)
-
Open your lens case carefully.
-
Use the soft-tip tweezers to gently lift the lens.
-
Pro Tip: Avoid using fingernails or the hard plastic part of the tool, as this can cause microscopic tears in the lens.
Step 3: Positioning the Lens
-
Transfer the lens from the tweezers to the suction cup/head of the Applicator.
-
The “U” Test: Ensure the lens is upright. It should look like a perfect bowl (U-shape). If the edges flare out like a plate, it is inside out.
-
Optional: Add a single drop of lens solution inside the lens bowl for extra moisture.
Step 4: Safe Insertion
-
Stand in front of a well-lit mirror.
-
Use your non-dominant hand to pull your upper eyelid up and your lower eyelid down.
-
Slowly bring the Applicator toward your eye and gently place the lens onto the cornea (the center) or the white part of the eye.
-
Once you feel the lens adhere, pull the applicator away slowly.
-
Look around (up, down, left, right) and blink gently to settle the lens into place.
Step 5: Removing the Lens Safely
-
The Pinch Method: Use the soft-tip tweezers to gently pinch the bottom edge of the lens.
-
Once you feel a slight grip, move the lens away from your eye.
-
Alternative: Use the applicator to gently slide the lens down to the white of your eye before pinching it off with the tweezers.
Maintenance & Safety Tips
-
Air Dry: After use, rinse your tools with solution and let them air dry inside their case to prevent mold or bacteria.
-
The 3-Month Rule: Replace your applicator and tweezer set every 2–3 months, just as you would your lens case.
-
Be Gentle: Never apply heavy pressure to your eyeball. If you feel discomfort, stop and try again.
